1998 BRIDGE INVENTORY

EDITOR NOTE: In the United States today approximately 600,000 bridges are under review for safety. Of that number 30 percent or 178,092 are considered substandard, ready for repair, replacement or reconditioning. The table below is by state.

Better Roads has reported annually the state of the nations bridges since 1979. Our thanks to all the state highway engineers for their continuing cooperation and special effort to provide current data. To see the previous year FHWA, in consultation with the States, has assigned a sufficiency rating (SR) to each bridge (20 ft. or more) inventoried. Formula (SR) rating factors are as outlined in the current "recording and Coding Guide for Structures Inventory and Appraisal (SI&A) of the Nation's Bridges."

Information current through October 1998.
